Samuel Frederick (Fred), my grandfather, began life as a brickworker but later,for years ,he was a driver, and looked after the horse of the horsedrawn delivery van for a local grocery store. During the first world war, 1914-1918, he was a seargent in the Royal Artillery Coastal Defence in Hong Kong. He was in charge of the barracks prison.
